Two-time drink-driver prosecuted

A recovering alcoholic who drink–drove to get more booze has had his licence removed for the second time.

Miles Haslam, 54, of The Mount, Wormhill, pleaded guilty to driving with excess alcohol when he appeared in High Peak Magistrates’ Court.

John Cooper, prosecuting, said police had been tipped off that there may be a drink–driver in Chapel–en–le–Frith on the evening of June 29. Officers saw the defendant’s Kia parked in the car park of Bargain Booze. They saw the defendant coming out of the shop and enter the vehicle before driving away.

After being pulled over, he was taken to the police station and found to have 87 microgrammes of alcohol in 100 millilitres of breath – the legal limit is 35. James Riley, defending, said his client had been suffering from a drinking problem, which he had recently been able to curb, however on the night in question had had a slip.

Haslam previously lost his licence following an earlier drink–driving conviction.

This time, magistrates banned him from driving for 40 months and ordered him to pay a £115 fine, £20 victim surcharge and £85 costs.
