Layers of peeling paint have been removed from the iconic bridge and replaced with the original colours it would have had when it was first opened in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s golden jubilee.

A spokesman for the district council said: “The bridge has been returned to its original four colours - warm stone, blueish grey, deep chocolate and golden yellow – and the great news is that the restoration work by Derbyshire company Tomlinsons has been completed in good time for the district council’s 2014 Matlock Bath Illuminations, which start their 117th season on Saturday, September 6.”
