VIDEO: Sheffield’s Great Yorkshire Run is charity hit

Bands helped runners find their rhythm as they pounded the streets of Sheffield in the annual Bupa Great Yorkshire Run - many raising thousands of charity.

Around 6,000 athletes and charity runners raced from Arundel Gate in the city centre to Hillsborough and back.

Ross Millington, from Stockport Harriers, was the first man to finish in 30 minutes and 20 seconds.

Gemma Steel, from Charnwood AC, led the women home in 33 minutes and 19 seconds.

Alice Sawrey-Cookson, aged 24, from Barnsley, completed the race just hours before she was due to jet off on a round-the-world trip.

She hopes to end her travels in Australia and was joined for the 10k race by her mum Liz Statham, 53, who was dressed in a kangaroo outfit.

Simon Scanes, aged 34, from Charnock, Sheffield, donned his Superman cape to help him fly around the course.

He ran for Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice and for every £10 raised he has promised to have a bucket of iced water poured over his head.

“I have done number of races for charity and am always well supported but for some reason I have had more £10s pledged than ever before because of the ice bucket challenges I have promised to do,” he said.

Parents whose children play football for Wisewood Juniors FC completed the race to help buy two defibrillators for the club.

They were inspired to run following the death of Craig Boynton, 48, who collapsed in front of his wife and children during a parents’ match last Easter.

Kirsty Bramhall, 28 and her brother David, 26, from Parson Cross, dressed as a dinosaur and a cat and raised money for Kidney Research UK and Sheffield Children’s Hospital.

Celebrities taking part included world cup referee Howard Webb.

Sky Sports presenter Charlie Webb ran with her Downton Abbey actor boyfriend Allen Leech, who swept her off her feet after they crossed the line together. The couple ran, asd part of a Sheffield United Blade Runners team, supporting Roundabout, a Local Youth Housing Charity.

Life On Mars star Dean Andrews and his Last Tango in Halifax co-star Josh Bolt also took part, raising cash for Leukaemia and Lymphoma Research.
