The event also marked a milestone in collaboration between the five awards bodies - four Chambers of Commerce and Johnston Press - parent company of the The Star, Doncaster Free Press and Derbyshire Times - and it is set to become a key fixture in the region’s business calendar. The Star Editor, Jeremy Clifford, said: “Tonight is a showcase for the best of the best. You are all already winners in your respective towns and regions.

“We at Sheffield Newspapers have been working with the Chambers of Commerce to stage this event which I believe properly reflects the progress this region has made. And I am confident this will be the first of many celebration events to come.”

The evening kicked off with a champagne reception where glamorous guests mingled and chatted before everyone was called into the main hall for dinner.

Andrew Cropley, executive director of strategic planning and business development at The Sheffield College, headline sponsors of the awards, gave a speech, followed by Sir Howard Davies, former deputy governor of the Bank of England, before Clare Frisby got down to business.

After the event, Mercury Taxis transported revellers free to Napoleons Casino on Ecclesall Road, to complete a night to remember.
