Pupils from Derbyshire County Council’s virtual school visited the Chatsworth Estate to proudly showcase an impressive piece of artwork.

Thirteen young people created two-metre-high letters which spell the words ‘virtual school’.

Each young person was supported by their creative mentor to produce the artwork, which reflects their personality and interests.

The letters have already been displayed at several places around Derbyshire including Derbyshire Eco Centre, Derby Theatre, Buxton Opera House and at the Arbor Low stone circle, with the aim of introducing the young people involved to some of the many inspiring places in Derbyshire.

Derbyshire’s virtual school was launched in September 2014.

It works alongside schools and offers support, guidance and training to ensure children in care get the best opportunities.

The vision of the scheme is to improve the lives of all children and young people in care through nurturing, empowering and inspiring them in partnership with all their supporters.

Derbyshire County Council’s deputy cabinet member for children’s services, Councillor Caitlin Bisknell said: “I’m really impressed with the hard work and enthusiasm these young people have put into this project.

“They’ve done a great job and it’s really nice to see how proud they are of this amazing piece of artwork.”

All Derbyshire’s cared for children, young people and care leavers belong to the virtual school.

The virtual school has a staffing structure similar to that of an actual school but without a school building.

Children and young people will remain enrolled at their existing school or setting with the virtual school offering support, guidance and training, to ensure that educational services are effectively coordinated and that cared for children and young people get the best opportunities to reach their fullest potential.
