Warning to Derbyshire shop owners after money scam

Shop owners in Hope Valley are being urged to be extra-vigilant following an attempted money scam.

Police were called following suspicious activity at a store on Hassop Road, Calver, at around 1pm on Saturday, April 23.

Two men entered the shop and asked the assistant to change a £20 note, before handing them a hand full of notes.

The man refused saying that he couldn’t change that amount of cash, but the men continued to ask for smaller amounts of cash to be changed.

Police have received reports of similar incidents in the past whereby offenders confuse members of staff when changing money and leave with more money than they entered with, often known as a ‘ringing the changes’ scam.

Officers are now reminding businesses to make sure staff are aware of the scam, and if they feel under pressure, or suspicious of a customer with this request, to ask a colleague to watch, to take their time or to not be afraid of politely saying no.

Anyone with information about the incident should contact Derbyshire police on 101, quoting incident 314 of 23.04.16, or call Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111.
