WEATHER UPDATE: East Midlands Airport had to be temporarily closed during snowfall

Falling snow this weekend, between Saturday evening, January 16, and Sunday morning, January 17, temporarily closed East Midlands Airport for more than four hours and flights had to be diverted.

Two passenger planes were diverted to Manchester and two carrying cargo were also caught-up in the closure.

The airport closed at 1am due to the “constant snow” and did not re-open until 5.40am on Sunday.

The Met Office has also warned of icy stretches of road today, Sunday, January 17, where snow has fallen across Derbyshire and the East Midlands overnight.

North Derbyshire and rural areas of Derbyshire have been particularly affected by snow.

Any residual patchy wintry precipitation is expected to clear south and west with some bright or sunny intervals.

A cold, dry day with light winds is expected.

Ice is likely to prove a hazard in places.

The Met Office is warning people about the potential for some travel disruption and difficult driving conditions.

Snake Pass was closed between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir, according to news reports, but has since been reopened.

By tonight the Met Office expects conditions to stay mainly dry with light winds and variable cloud overnight.

Clearer spells may allow for a sharp frost to develop, perhaps with isolated freezing fog patches, and icy patches on untreated surfaces.

The Met Office warned of more frost, ice and frosty fog patches into Monday with widespread frost until Wednesday.

However, milder weather has been forecast for the end of the week.
