By tonight, the Met Office has predicted the odd wintry shower will continue over coastal areas overnight, and with some more general snow likely on the Derbyshire hills.

There is expected to be widespread frost with some ice on untreated surfaces.

Temperatures are expected to fall as low as zero degrees centigrade with highs of about three degrees centigrade across the East Midlands.

Nationally, outbreaks of sleet and snow are expected to spread from the northwest on Saturday, initially into western Scotland, and then into parts of northwest England later in the day before reaching the Midlands and southern England during the evening and night.

There could be 1-3cm snowfall at low levels with 5-10cm possible above 200 metres across western Scotland and Cumbria, according to the Met Office.

Ice may prove an additional hazard in places.

The Met Office has also warned of the potential for some travel disruption and difficult driving conditions.
