Wet weather fails to dampen Alfreton’s festive spirit

Wet weather failed to put a dampener on the festive spirit in Alfreton during the recent lights switch-on.

The switch was flicked by Town mayor, Marlene Bennett, with the help of Derby County mascot, Rammie.

A spokesman for the council said: “Alfreton Town Council made a large investment last year to improve the displays around town, converting the displays to LED which not only makes the lights brighter but also more cost efficient.

“The displays have been extended along Mansfield Road, New Street and Limes Avenue, new for 2015.”

The town’s shops stayed open late, while the crowds were entertained by school choirs, including Copthorne Infant Community School, Christ the King Primary School and Woodbridge Junior School.

There were fairground rides and local charity stalls and businesses holding raffles, tombolas, selling cakes and goods along with fairground rides.
