Wirksworth Swimming Pool has launched an appeal to aid its much-needed repairs to the pool.

The community-owned pool are bidding on a £5,000 community award from the OneFamily Foundation to replace its old and damaged sand filter, which is now 30 years old and nearing failure – and will need updating so the facility can continue to provide an array of aquatic activities.

Gabriel Babenko, Trustee of Wirksworth Swimming Pool, said “Wirksworth Swimming Pool is a fantastic and vital community facility, and this is a great opportunity for our pool users and members of our community to show their support for the pool and to keep it operating in the best way possible.

“It’s amazing to see the votes coming in, together I’m sure we can achieve our goal of over 1,000 votes.”

Votes are already coming in thick and fast and from as far afield as Singapore and the USA, however, there is still a long way to go for the pool to be in with a chance of winning the award.

The pool was rescued from closure by the council three years ago when the community took over to manage it as a charity, so although it is now self-financing it cannot generate enough surplus revenue for plant replacements, so voting for the grant will make a big impact.
