Wirksworth knitting group creates giant poppy

A group has been knitting hard to show their appreciation for the sacrifices made by service men and women during the Great War.

The Knit and Natter group, which meets in Wirksworth Library, has made a giant poppy out of lots of smaller knitted poppies for Armistice Day, on November 11.

Library manager Mark Lilley said: “Ever since Christine Stone – one of our avid library users and readers – approached me asking whether Wirksworth Library could host the group, it’s gone from strength to strength.

“Christine is such a bubbly, infectious personality, I knew we’d soon have a knitting revolution on our hands.

“We then recruited our dedicated Derbyshire County Council volunteer, Georgina Hollinshead, to spearhead and oversee the community project and the rest is history.

“Many new friendships have developed with Carol Lewis, Jeannette Taylor and Judy Bunting also joining the ranks. Stories have been shared, coffee, teas and biscuits consumed and last but not least dozens of knitted masterpieces created and donated to worthwhile causes.”

The library is now holding a competition for the public to count all of the poppies on the display. The correct answers will be put into a hat and the winner drawn out will receive a box of chocolates.
