Wirksworth open gardens coming soon

Wirksworth residents are preparing to open up their hidden gardens and courtyards to the public as the town gears up for its annual open gardens event.

The delightful and colourful event is taking place on June 29-30 and is a “must see” for garden lovers.

Organiser Heather Lounds said: “This event has become a must for garden lovers and those of us who just like to wander through gardens and take time to enjoy sipping tea and biscuits in beautiful places.

“An added attraction for Wirksworth, though, is the views that are revealed from many of the gardens and spaces. Live music is an added attraction and the opportunity to enjoy the variety of shops and places for lunch – including the local brewery – that the town has to offer.”

A bonus this year is the opportunity to attend a Gardener’s Question time with Anne Liverman.

Anne regulary participates in Radio Derby Gardners Question Time, has participated in the recent Gardners World Event at the NEC and opens her gardens twice a year as part of the NGS Open Gardens Scheme. The event takes place in the Baptist Church Hall, Coldwell Street on Saturday between 11am and 12pm.

The gardens are open from 12pm until 5pm on Saturday, June 29 and Sunday, June 30.

Tickets, in the form of badges, are £4 for adults (under 16’s free, concessions £3) and will be on sale at three venues – Orchard House, St John’s Street; the Care Centre, Greengates Caldwell Street and some local shops.

All proceeds will go to support local charities and activities including Wirksworth Care Centre and Study Guatemala, a charity supporting education for children in Guatemala City.
