Wirksworth Parade is saved thanks to dedicated team

Less than one month ago it looked as though the event – which has been a fixture in Wirksworth since 1827 – would be cancelled.

But following the election of a new organising committee, the wells, parade and entertainment are going ahead.

Chair Sally Smart, who is joined by Vice-Chair Victoria Beech, Secretary Saskia North and Treasurer Danielle Heathcote, said: “We are so pleased this tradition will continue. While the short time frame never put us off, we have achieved far more than we could possibly have imagined, to which we owe massive thanks to everybody who has contributed.”

Celebrations commence at 10.45am on Saturday, May 25, with the blessing of the wells at St Mary’s church, followed by a walk around the wells.

Last year’s queen Shannon Temperton and royalty will then be re-crowned at 2pm in the market place.

A musical performance from the BM&W brass band will be held on May 26 in the Memorial Gardens from 2-4pm.

The parade starts at 12pm on Monday, May 27, from Anthony Gell School and will run through St Johns Street, to North End and back again. The day also comprises of stalls, rides, a bouncy castle and entertainment, with a craft fair in the memorial hall the entire weekend.
