Derbyshire Dales District Council approved an application to build a McDonald’s drive–thru restaurant on the former Madison’s site, in Bakewell Road, in August last year.

This week, the Mercury has learned that building work on the new drive-thru will start next month. The restaurant is likely to open in early 2016.

Adam Brand, senior acquisitions surveyor for McDonald’s, said there would be 65 jobs created by the restaurant, which may increase over time.

He added that the firm also provided good training opportunities for its employees, the majority of whom would be from the local area.

The proposals divided opinion among Mercury readers.

A McDonald’s spokesperson said: “Following approved planning permission, work will start next month. This is due for completion in the first quarter of next year, when the restaurant will open for the first time. This new site will provide around 65 new jobs and significant investment to the local area.

“Those employed at our new restaurant will have access to leading training schemes, as well as the opportunity to gain nationally recognised qualifications in Maths and English, apprenticeships in hospitality and even a Foundation Degree. We are committed to every local community we operate in, and our priority is to be a good neighbour to all.”
