DERWENT: Dam Busters commemorated in picture gallery

The servicemen who took part in the Second World War RAF Dam Busters’ raid - which involved training at Derwent Reservoir’s Ladybower Dam - have been commemorated with a gallery of photographs.

BBC News joined forces with Dam Busters’ enthusiasts to put together the online gallery of the heroes this week during the 70th anniversary year of the Operation Chastise mission.

Following training in Derbyshire’s Derwent Valley, RAF bombers broke two large dams in the Ruhr Valley, Germany, on May 16, 1943, with bouncing bombs with the aim of flooding numerous factories.

David Robertson, chairman of the 617 Squadron Association, said it is a fitting commemoration of the men whose skill, courage, determination and airmanship has gone down in the annals of air warfare.
