1st Youlgrave Guides are hosting an evening of illustrated talks by two intrepid local women, in order to raise funds towards the unit’s summer trip to Denmark. Marianne Heading from Clay Cross will make you shiver as she describes competing in the world’s coldest and toughest ‘Ultra Distance Race’ in the Yukon last year (temperatures as low as –30°C). Meanwhile, Tracey Worth from Chelmorton will also leave you astonished at her tale of how she and her family sailed round the world – and had to be rescued after hitting an iceberg!
The event takes place at 7.30pm on Friday, June 7, in Youlgrave Village Hall.
Tickets cost £5 adults/£3 under 18 in advance, or £6/£4 on the door. They are available from Penny McCloy (tel 01629 636125).
A total of 29 Guides from Youlgrave, Stanton, Birchover and Winster will be heading for Denmark in July, plus several girls from Bakewell Guides. They will be camping for a week at a Danish Guide and Scout centre in Zealand.
The girls from Youlgrave Guide unit are drawn from a wide variety of social backgrounds and for some this will be the first time abroad. The evening of illustrated talks in Youlgrave is one of several fundraising events we are organising to keep the cost of the trip as low as possible and make it affordable to all who want to come.
In 2009 Youlgrave Guides visited Iceland, after which the economy crashed and a volcano erupted. We hope that our impact on Denmark is a little less dramatic!
