Youngsters set their sights on bronze awards

Sylvie and June, both year nine students at Highfields School in Matlock, have set out to get their bronze award by taking part in community service for the Darley Dale In Bloom Society.

June said: “Darley Dale in Bloom has kindly allowed us to help with various community activities, undertaken by the society.

“We attend the society committee meetings where we discuss the activities to be undertaken.

“On February 5, we enjoyed taking part in the litter pick in Darley Dale along the new cycle path. We collected several bin liners of litter, resulting in a much cleaner environment for everyone to enjoy.

“Darley Dale in Bloom have kindly let Sylvie and I take responsibility for the Knot Garden in Darley Dale. Over the coming months, we will weed the garden, remove plants which are no longer required and replant an array of flowers and shrubs.

“The flower bed will be part of the Darley Dale in Bloom village assessment in the summer.

Sylvie and I will join in fundraising events which include – the dog show in April at the Whitworth Park, the fundraising auction which will help us raise funds for the flowers for the knot garden.

“We enjoy being a part of the community and giving something back. We feel that we are very lucky to be a part of the Darley Dale in Bloom society, which is supporting Sylvie and I to complete our community service in a bid to obtain our awards.

“Our school, Highfields, has a great Duke of Edinburgh’s award club where students can participate through to their gold standard.

“Sylvie and I are looking forward to seeing the flower displays throughout Darley Dale this summer.”
