On June 28 the council’s planning committee meets to decide on the planning application to develop Cawdor Quarry and the Permanite site – a decision that was deferred at their last meeting in December. This development will have a massive impact on Matlock and the surrounding area. It is a public meeting and anyone who cares about the future of Matlock and its environment should be there.
The application includes housing on the adjoining Snitterton Fields green field site – even though there is massive opposition and the fields were excluded from housing development in the Local Plan. Nonetheless, the developers are putting a lot of pressure on councillors to approve it.
This is the last chance for the local community to encourage councillors to ensure that greedy commercial interest does not override their Local Plan – a plan that was painstakingly created to protect against this kind of encroachment into precious green land.
The committee meets at 6pm on Thursday, June 28 at Matlock Town Hall. A show of concern by the public will help councillors to make the right decision and vote ‘no’. There is more information at www.saveourfields.org.
