Fun ideas for celebrating your birthday during lockdown

Many people with birthdays coming up will be spending them in lockdown - but there are still ways you can have a blast at home.

Those with birthdays coming up in April and May might be feeling a tad disappointed, given any big birthday plans involving large groups, restaurants or bars will have to be put on hold for the time being.

However, with a little bit of creativity and flexibility, there are still plenty of ways to enjoy a birthday at home.

Throw a virtual party

Thanks to the wonders of modern technology, you can still socialise face to (virtual) face with your friends and family, no matter how far away they may be.

If you were planning to get together with friends and family for your birthday, why not take the occasion online instead? Send out invites, get some drinks in, and enjoy some socialising for your special day.

If you have a friend with a birthday coming up, you could even organise an online surprise party - ask them to set up a video call with you, then sneakily give their friends and family the link to join too.

Video calls don't have to just be chatting either - you could set up a pub quiz or other party games to play with friends and family.

Bring the restaurant to your home

You might not be able to head out to your favourite restaurant to eat, but that doesn't mean you can't enjoy some excellent cooking at home.

If you're able to get some good supplies in, why not cook - or get your housemates, family or partner to cook - a three course meal for your special day?

Set out candles, put on some of your favourite music, and crack open a bottle of wine for a true 'restaurant at home' experience.

If you're not able to get to the shops or don't have the right food in, check whether any restaurants in your area are offering a form of delivery - you may find your favourite businesses have adapted in the face of the crisis.

Host a micro pub crawl

This one requires a little make-believe and living with other people - but if you were planning to hit the town for your birthday, get creative and host a pub crawl in your own home.

Assign a drink to each room of the house and hop from one to the next with your partner, housemates or family. It might not be quite the same as popping to your local, but you'll certainly save on the price of a pint.

Dance in your living room

Some people have gone even further than in-house bar crawls - hosting their own mini club nights inside their own homes.

Taking care not to disturb any neighbours, you could celebrate your milestone by putting on some music and having a dance with the people you live with.

Some world-famous DJs are now even offering live-streamed sets - so you can bring top-quality music right into your living room.
