The amount of people adopting a vegan or vegetarian lifestyle is on the rise, with food outlets throughout the UK creating new products to cater for them – including McDonald’s.

The popular fast food chain recently added new vegetarian dishes to its menu, but now McDonald’s is going a step further by introducing vegan nuggets.

In January, McDonald’s released a vegan-friendly Happy Meal in the UK, which includes a Spicy Veggie Wrap which is made from red pesto, sweetcorn and breadcrumbs.

Other food retailers are also expanding their menu to include more vegetarian and vegan option, with Greggs recently adding the now popular vegan sausage roll to their menu.

McVegan nuggets

The nuggets are currently being offered in some of the chain’s Norway outlets, the business has had great success with their soy-based McVegan burger in both Finland and Sweden and their McFalafel in Sweden.

A spokesman for the global fast food chain said that the vegan nuggets are made with mashed potato, chickpeas, onion, carrots and corn and are then coated in a layer of breadcrumbs and fried until crispy.

Lucy Brady, a Senior Vice President of McDonald’s said, “Plant-based protein is something we’re keeping our eye on.”
