The Matlock-based Youth Hostels Association (YHA) has held its annual six-a-side football tournament at Cavendish Fields in aid of the YHA Breaks for Kids fund.

Teams from Matlock and Chesterfield assembled on a cold and blustery evening to battle it out through the rounds to find a winning team for 2013.

Several YHA staff took part. Including a team of young ladies whose steely determination saw them give a good account of themselves against the men’s teams, despite only scoring one goal throughout.

The eventual winners from the 12 local teams were the Matlock based team ‘Murder on Zidane’s Floor’, who showed their class right from the kick off.

The players were Jim Holmes, Jamie Uphill, George Whittaker, Callum Gill, Steve Wood, Matt Jowsey, Dan Bridge and former YHA employee Ben Chamberlain.

The event, which raised £1,000 for the Breaks for Kids fund in support of disadvantaged children, was generously supported by three referees from Chesterfield and YHA manager, Simon Ainley, who managed the four pitches.

Crewenna Dymond, Head of Volunteering and Fundraising at YHA said: “We’d like to thank everyone involved in organising and supporting the event.

“It’s great to see so many local teams and supporters coming together to have fun and raise money for Breaks for Kids.

“We cannot thank them enough. All the money raised will help children and young people to take part in an educational activity break that we know will inspire them.

“Without our football event that so many local people have helped us put on, some children would miss out on this valuable experience.”
