Yorkshire & District League
Ashford-in-the-Water moved up to second place in Division Two of the YDCL despite being beaten by leaders Civil Service.
Winning the toss, the visitors decided to bat on a drying wicket and proved hard to dislodge. Pete Marsden (1-23) bowled without much luck whilst Kevn Rowney (1-18) bowled his customary tight line.
Andy Higgins (14) and Nigel Oakes (16) got SCS off to a steady start, but Scott Wilson (45) and Steve Frier (33) took their chances and pushed the score along to 114.
Ashford then fought back with Cameron Higginbottom (4-49) and Joe Muir (3-52) taking the visitors apart and some excellent fielding restricted the total to just 150.
Ashford’s reply made a stuttering start, but James Bentley (17) and Julian Henson (15) soon started to pick off the bowlers and the scoreboard seemed to be ticking over comfortably.
However, Dave Whitby’s (5-25) nagging line and length coupled with Rob Horne’s (2-37) bustling enthusiasm snared the heart of the home side’s line up and put SCS in control. Only Adam Yarwood (11) managed double figures as Ashford lost wickets steadily.
Skipper Marsden then took the fight to the Sheffield teambut when he was out for a valiant 37, the writing was on the wall and SCS soon wrapped up the innings.
The losing bonus points pushed Ashford up to second, with teams around them also faltering.
