Weston Park Hospital 1st XI 179 All Out (20 pts) beat Ashford in the Water 1st XI 140-7 (5 pts) by 39 runs

Ashford secured their place in Division Two of the Yorkshire and Derbyshire League for next season, despite losing to Weston Park at the HSBC Ground.

Electing to bat first on a wet wicket, the home side were soon in trouble as Joe Muir (2-32) struck in his first over.

Wickets fell regularly as Peter Marsden (5-41) took advantage of the damp conditions, reducing the physicians to 66-6 at the drinks break.

However, not for the first time this season, Ashford failed to capitalise on their early superiority as Mohit Sharma (30) and Sagar Shanghavi (52) attacked with some aggressive strokeplay and the home side reached 179 from 45 overs.

Ashford’s reply began steadily as Andrew Paulett (39) and Julian Henson (52) batted determinedly in the deteriorating conditions. But tight bowling saw the visitors slip further behind the required rate.

In the end, a brief cameo from Kevn Rowney ensured Ashford took five points from the encounter.

With sides below them losing, Ashford cannot now be caught and will hope to push for promotion again in 2012.
