Playing a strong Leek side, Buxton were 3-1 down at half-time, the home team’s goal scored by Lowton at the far post, courtesy of a Rowlands cross after a strong run to the byline.

Captain Mather had to leave the field with a pulled hamstring just before half-time, and with just 10 men in the second half, Buxton seemed to work harder and only conceded one more goal.

Buxton’s seconds had a good first half, scoring first, and were only 2-3 down at the interval, but a disastrous second half saw them concede 5 goals to slip a heavy defeat on Saturday.

Winger Houghton made a dashing run down the right,passed to Matt Lomas, who slipped the ball to Meaton to smash the ball into the goal form close range.

After conceding two goals from short corners, Meaton drew level with a fierce angled shot which glanced in off a defender’s foot.

Leek then went ahead from an open play goal, before striker Talbot missed an opportunity to equal the scores again when he mistimed his effort from only seven metres out.

Full-back Drennan had to leave the field after only 15 minutes with a pulled muscle, though should be fit for the weekend.

Meanwhile, In the England Hockey Cup fixture, Buxton’s seconds had a walkover against Old Wulfrunians from Wolverhampton on Sunday and now go into round two.

Lymn 3rd 7-0 Buxton 3rd

Buxton’s third team’s first-ever ‘league’ match saw them travel to Lymm where they were overpowered.

Ramgarhia 2nd v Buxton 2nd, away, leaving at 11.45 pm.

Buxton 3rd v Timperley 6th, home, 12pm.
