Baileans secure first win of the season

Matlock Baileans firsts finally secured their first win of the Midlands Premier Division season with a 3-2 success at fellow strugglers Sutton Coldfield.

Matlock took a while to settle and were punished for their lack of organisation when Sutton scored with a shot that deflected off Ruth Whittaker and past Alison Millyard.

Matlock soon got to grips with Sutton’s style of play but remained behind at half-time after struggling to convert several short corners.

Matlock made a positive start to the second-half, upping the tempo and soon rewarded with a equaliser as a well-struck short corner from Rachel Moor was also defected in off a defender’s stick.

Matlock kept the momentum going and soon added two more well-worked goals from open play by Iris Kleckova and Nina Smedley.

Sutton then pushed Matlock back and nicked another goal to take it to 3-2, but Matlock held on to gain the points.

Matlock’s thirds were at home in the second round of the cup after a bye and faced an inter-club clash against Matlock seconds.

The thirds had a very young side on display but held out well to half-time with the score at 0-0, Chris Poyser in goal dealing with most threats.

The seconds finally went in front early in the second-half, Grace turning home from close range.

Kate Meynell then struck the second following a short corner and that proved to be the last goal of the game as the seconds won 2-0.

Baileans went in front through Leila Pankhurst and added a second through Elise Charlton, wrapping up a fine first-half with Beth Hamill-Keays on target.

Derby pulled a goal back in the second-half but Matlock were comfortable winners.

Baileans fifths put in a fine performance against Amber Valley Hornets in the League Cup but lost out to a single goal, players of the match being Jo Wilmot and Sarah English.
