Matlock Baileans 3rds 1
Derby Asterdale 2nds 0
Matlock built on the previous week’s friendly success by opening their league campaign with a victory on Saturday against Derby Asterdale, who were recently relegated from the Midlands League.
Matlock started the game well with some attacking runs into the opposition’s D, surprising the experienced Asterdale side.
However, Asterdale gathered themselves and pressed hard into the Matlock half.
Great defence work from Jenny Brown, Jenny Kennedy, Jenny Allwood and Hollie Smedley kept Asterdale at bay, while goalkeeper, Amanda Jaques had her work cut out and thwarted several shots.
The second-half saw a tiring opposition and Matlock capitalised on this.
The right side combination of youngsters Becca Knowles and Beth Harwood stretched the Asterdale defence with some skilful runs up the wing.
The midfield of experienced players Jane Proctor, Donna Poplar and Catherine Croney also made sure the opposition didn’t get through.
Continued pressure from Matlock was finally rewarded when Croney took the ball from the 25 yard line into the D before passing to Becky Doxey on the left post who swept the ball in past the goalkeeper.
The last quarter of the game saw Matlock batten down the hatches to fend off several attacks, Chloe Farmer, in her new role as centre back, stopping any danger from the opposition.
Farmer had stepped into the team at the last minute along with Smedley to aid Matlock’s cause.
This was a fine win for the Matlock team against an experienced opposition and good preparation for next week’s game against Roll Royce.
