Yorkshire & Derbyshire League
A consummate display by Ashford saw them comprehensively beat Sheffield University Staff II at Mill Lane on Saturday.
Batting first, the Ashford openers James Bentley (35) and Cameron Higginbottom (32) compiled their best league start of the season with a well put together partnership of 64.
The dismissal of Higginbottom and Ben Drury saw Simon Davies hit a breezy 21, before an unexpected and careless collapse to 94-5 saw the tables turned somewhat as Staff slow bowler Jithendra Ratnayaka (4/13) began to tie the Ashford batsmen in knots with a beguiling spell of off spin.
However, Adam Yarwood stepped up to the plate and went on the counter-attack, scoring an excellent 37, well assisted for the second week on the trot by Captain Marsden who hit 21 batting at number ten.
Ashford managed 164 all out, perhaps a little under par on what looked a decent batting wicket and fast outfield.
In reply the Staff reply got off to a calamitous start as they quickly collapsed to 10-4 with the chief destroyer being Yarwood’s pace, to which the batsmen seemingly had no answer.
Aided by excellent all round fielding and only temporarily aided by a fifth wicket partnership of ten, Ashford kept up the momentum and after 18 sorry overs the Staff were dismissed for a paltry 32 runs with Yarwood taking his Ashford best of 6-13 and Joe Muir chipping in with 3-6.
Ashford remain at the top of Division Two with a narrow 12 point cushion.
