Biker Annie is heading for Glasgow

Last, 23, gained national attention in 2012 when she was part of the Great Britain squad at the London Olympics, claiming an eighth place finish in the cross-country discipline.

She was the first lady to be selected in the Olympic mountain bike squad in 12 years.

The Commonwealth Games start on Wednesday, July 23 with the opening ceremony. The mountain bike events are due to take place on July 29.

Last said: “I am really happy to be selected for the Commonwealth Games.

“To be part of a major games in the UK will be a great experience and having taken part at the London Olympics I am looking forward to the opportunity to compete in front of a home crowd again.

“I am really grateful for all the support that has helped me get into a position to compete at the games and would like to thank my coach Phil Dixon and my team, Trek Factory Racing.

“It is an honour to race for England and I hope to compete to the best of my ability and do myself and everyone proud.”

Last will be part of a 31-strong cycling team - including 25 who were part of Team GB in the Olympics - that will compete across a range of events in Glasgow.

They include Olympic track champions Laura Trott, Joanna Rowsell, Dani King, Ed Clancy, Steven Burke, Jason Kenny and Philip Hindes, as well as Sir Bradley Wiggins who is selected for the road racing team.

Last’s selection follows on from that of Tansley clay shooter Caroline Povey, who, as reported in last week’s Mercury, has also been called up to compete for England in Glasgow.
