Briggs selected to be part of the British Cycling junior set up

Matlock's Sarah Briggs is celebrating after being selected to be part of the British Cycling team.

The U15s National Hill Climbing Champion has also been selected to ride for the East Midlands team last year.

She took part in an apprentice camp in Manchester with British Cycling last month and said she was excited to be part of the team’s youth category for U16s.

The 15-year-old said: “At the camp we did circuit training, strength and conditioning work and four hours on the track as well as road riding.

“The British Cycling team’s youth category is a stepping stone before making it into the junior academy and then after that it’s seniors.

“I was really pleased when I heard that I had a place. There will be several training camps throughout the year working towards national events.”

Briggs, a Derby High School student, also receives a Squadkit Scholarship, which consists of kit and money towards the cost of travel expenses.

Judith Hancock, Head of PE at Derby High School, congratulated Briggs on her achievement.

She said: “This is a very exciting time for Sarah as she embarks on her journey with British Cycling’s Olympic Development squad and her ultimate goal of an Olympic debut.

“Derby High is immensely proud of her and we fully support her commitment to her sport. Well done, Sarah.”
