Darley Dale 2nds entertained Kirk Langley in a Division 7N Derbyshire County League top-of-the-table contest on Saturday.
Darley must thank the hard work of groundsmen Bob Winthrop and Craig Elliott to allow the game to proceed after torrential rain had struck Station Road.
Darley won the toss and invited the subdued Kirk Langley to bat first on a playable but soggy pitch.
Langley’s mood was to darken further with the intelligent and at points unplayable bowling of Wright and Tong.
Tong bowled with fire in his belly and produced a spell of bowling which left Langley’s top order struggling, finishing the innings with career best figures of 5-14.
Tong was supported well by the wily bowling of Thompson (3-14) who pinned Langley’s batsman down with an immaculate line and length. Kirk Langley were eventually dismissed for 78 in the 43rd over.
In reply, Darley’s openers Shaw and Marsden began in a positive manner to frustrate the Langley attack in a stand of 42 before Marsden was caught by a brilliant diving catch.
Then the in-form Smith entered the arena. Lusty blows and classy drives were the song Smith was singing and he brought the game home for Darley in the 25th over.
Darley are now in third position on 161, 12 points behind Wirksworth and Middleton in second and 16 behind leaders Wingerworth.
Darley now march on to Sawley and Long Eaton in a must win match as they hunt down the title.
