MEMBERS of Matlock Athletics Club were in action at the weekend as Mansfield hosted its annual half marathon.
Despite a breeze the new half marathon route proved gruelling with most front runners well short of personal best times.
The hilly course and soaring temperatures of 26 degrees tested the top runners.
The winning man was Tipton Harriers’ Mark Powell in 1 hour 12 minutes, some three-and-a-half minutes ahead of second placed Tim Hartley (Notts AC) who finished in 1 hour 16 minutes.
Matlock AC’s Christine Howard, twice a ladies winner in this event in the past, was first lady home again, her time of 1 hour 26 minutes almost five minutes ahead of second lady Julie Lamb of Wigston Phoenix. Belper Harriers’ Stephanie Ilsley was third lady home.
The next Matlock runner to cross the finish line was the ever-improving Alan Pickering, who paced Christine for the first six miles then dropped back to finish well within 1 hour 30 minutes.
Richard Bradbury was next in, followed closely by Jim Thorneycroft and Martin Lea.
Julie Goodwin rounded up the Matlock athletes clocking 1 hour 56 minutes.
