Dave Houghton wants to see Derbyshire go one step further in Vitality Blast

Dave Houghton wants to see Derbyshire go one better when this year’s Vitality Blast finally gets underway.

The Falcons were beaten by Essex in the finals day semi-final last year following a best ever campaign by the club.

But Derbyshire’s head of cricket sees no reason why the competition’s traditional minnow cannot finally land the big prize .

“We got to finals day last year, but it was a disappointing day in the end,” he said.

“We would love to go one stage better next year and get a trophy in the T20 and I don't see any reason why we shouldn't.

“We have pretty much the same side we had last year so it is a strong outfit. We have got a good squad now and good core.

“They work really hard and are good thinkers.

"Being able to solve problems on your own feet is something I promote all the time.

“You can’t rely on coaches because when you cross the line it is up to you only.

" We have got a good group who can now solve those problems and that is a good place to be for us.

“I think we should challenge in the four-day game as well. I thought although we had a goodish season we should have done better in the four-day competition."

A replacement T20 competition will take place this year with three regional groups of teams, each playing 10 matches before the usual quarter-finals and finals day at Edgbaston.

The fixtures are expected to be released in mid-August ahead of a 27th August start.
