Derbyshire CCC extend condolences to loved ones of Phillip Hughes

Derbyshire CCC have extended their deepest sympathies to the friends and family of Australian batsman Phillip Hughes, following his tragic death.

Hughes had been in a critical condition after being struck on the head by a short delivery during a Sheffield Shield match at the Sydney Cricket Ground two days ago.

He passed away aged 25.

A statement from Derbyshire CCC read: “Cricket Derbyshire would like to extend our thoughts and deepest condolences to family and friends of Phillip Hughes at this difficult time.”

The release of the 2015 fixtures, scheduled for today (Thursday, November 26), will be postponed until tomorrow.

At a press conference in Australia, captain and close friend of Hughes, Michael Clarke, read out a statement on behalf of the Hughes family.

It read: “We’re devastated by the loss of our much-loved son and brother Phillip.

“It’s been a very difficult few days, we appreciate all the support we have received from family, friends, players, Cricket Australia and the general public.

“Cricket was Phillip’s life and we as a family shared that love of the game with him. We would like to thank all the medical and nursing staff at St Vincent’s Hospital and Cricket New South Wales medical staff for their great efforts with Phillip. We love you.”
