Derbyshire resolute but Lancashire pile on the runs

Lancashire’s batsmen continued to pile on the runs on the third morning of their LV= Division Two match against Derbyshire at Southport and they go into the afternoon session with a first-innings lead of 109.

Billy Godleman’s bowlers stuck to their task but the home side were 479 for six at lunch with Ashwell Prince on 217 not out, having become only the fourth man to make a first-class double century at Trafalgar Road

Prince reached the landmark after 394 minutes’ batting off 291 balls when he drove David Wainwright through the covers. By that point he had hit 27 fours and one six but his appetite for runs remained unassuaged.

Derbyshire took two wickets during the morning. Alex Davies was caught at second slip for 37 by Chesney Hughes off Tom Taylor when attempting a cut. Then Jordan Clark made a rapid 39 off 50 balls before being lbw when attempting to whack Wainwright across the line.

The bowling of Derbyshire’s Taylor remained wholehearted this morning and the keeping of Harvey Hosein unobtrusively excellent. The 18-year-old has conceded just nine byes in 479 runs and has stood up to the wicket for large portions of the innings.
