Guests bowled over at annual cricket dinner

DARLEY Dale Cricket Club notched up over a century at their annual dinner held at Matlock Golf Club.

No less than 101 guests enjoyed a wonderful evening, which saw the guest of honour - former New Zealand Test player Iain O’Brien - present the trophy winners with their awards.

Clubman of the year went to the irrepressible Jonathan Shaw who has worked tirelessly in all aspects of Darley Club life.

He received the Sid Quigley cup for his outstanding contribution.

Jack Stone received the Joe Hurst shield for outstanding performance of the season, namely his match winning 100 not out against Morton.

The Young Player of the year went to Matthew Wright (pictured), who broke in to the second team at the age of 13 and was a regular member of the team.

Matthew performed superbly with both bat and ball and is well set for a successful career.

The old player of the season went to Simon Cotterill for his career best haul of 53 league wickets and selection to Derbyshire Over 50s, who retained their County Championship trophy.

Charlotte Horton was again recognised for her 177 not out for Derbyshire Women and her excellent camera work, covering all angles.

Once again Jim Fearn and Hilary Leam royally entertained the large gathering with their scintillating repetoire of songs accompanied by the Phil ‘Elvis’ Hurst.

One of the highlights of the evening was Jack ‘Leroy’ Stone’s Jumbo Raffle which brought much mirth and merriment.

This was only eclipsed when the Clubman of the Year Jonny Shaw went down on one knee, not to play a reverse sweep, but to ask for his girlfriend, the beautiful Stephanie Holmes’ hand in marriage which brought the house down.

Fortunately she accepted and our congratulations go to the both of them.

Simon Cotterill said: “Sincere thanks again went to Jamie Watts for again organising a superb evening.

“Everything is set for for Darley to celebrate their 150 year anniversary next year in great style, with a series of exciting events planned.”
