Matlock and Cromford Meadows skipper pleased with new club’s progress

Ed Lander has been pleased with the progress being made at Matlock and Cromford Meadows CC.

The first XI have seen two defeats and a win so far from their opening games, with last Saturday’s game at Hundall cancelled due to rain.

And despite the mixed results, Lander believes there is plenty to be positive about.

He said: “Although the results have not quite been there yet, we have had a positive start to the season with some exciting prospects.

“There is a great atmosphere within the team that has been noted by player-coach Kamran Afzaal, Scott Cooke Sean Beastall and Umar Zamman who are all new at Matlock. The positive atmosphere was evident in parts of the first two games in which we had strong periods but unfortunately couldn’t get over the line.

"These positives include the spin bowling of Drew Mullaney and Umar, who provide a leg spin/off spin combination to rival any in the division. When both are on song in the middle overs it’s hard to see where the opposition will score runs.

"The batting has also taken a step forward, with Kamran and Umar showing their potential at Denby. Both were disappointed to not go on to big scores, but with the glimpse of talent shown there will be plenty to come.

"Scott Cooke has also been a big acquisition with his wicket keeping and exciting batting – a 43 against Langley Mill really tipped the game in our favour.

"Sean Beastall’s energy has also been present in all three matches, encouraging Matlock when others’ heads may have dropped, which will be crucial if we are to reach our potential throughout the season.”

As well as displays with bat and ball, the effect of work off the pitch has also been key, according to Lander.

He added: “Above any individual performances is the new found team spirit. Training has been stronger than it has for years, with Kamran leading sessions and working on players individually and as a group.

"The hard work paid off with an exciting win over Langley Mill which really brought the team together. We hope to carry this energy into the next game at home to Ambergate. If we can get both the batting and bowling firing at the same time we will be a daunting prospect for the rest of the season.”
