Defeats for second and third elevens

Matlock 2nd XI entertained Eckington’s seconds in Division Five North at Causeway Lane.

Eckington won the toss and put Matlock into bat, but after losing Mark Burton and Steve Pell, Matt Haywood took control and, when partnered by skipper Paul Chadbourne, opened his shoulders and gave a batting exhibition in scoring 133 not out.

Only three wickets fell during the 46 overs and the innings ended at 209-3.

Matlock’s opening bowlers David Lander and Ed Lander bowled line and length but the batsmen’s confidence grew as runs began to flow until first change Sam Lawson bowled the number two batsman with his third ball.

But three of the first four Eckington batsmen reached fifties in quick time, and the end result was a win for Eckington by six wickets with six overs to spare.

The third XI were heavily defeated by nine wickets at Stanton-by-Dale.

Put in to bat, the first three batsmen Phil Braund, Steve Webster and Andy Neil made a good start but at 72-2 Matlock collapsed to the bowling of A Babla (4-24) and B Turner (3-13) and were all out for 101.

Stanton took the task of scoring 102 sedately, now allowed 56 overs.

Andy Hawkmoon took an early wicket but Stanton’s experienced batsmen saw him off with caution scoring 43 and 54 not out respectively.

They then took a further seven overs to reach the winning total of 101 for 1.
