Shiv Thakor and Andy Carter shared a whirlwind stand of 48 for the 10th wicket to give Derbyshire three batting points and a handy total of 324 on the second day at Northampton.
Luke Fletcher was ninth man out to just the fifth ball of the morning, bowled by Azharullah, adding just one to his overnight total. But any hopes Northamptonshire had of quickly ending the Derbyshire first innings were spoiled by Thakor and Carter.
Thakor took his overnight 60 to 83 not out with some clever placement. Carter was more recreational in slapping three boundaries in his 19-ball 17. He eventually top-edged a hook to long leg.
But there was no joy for Derbyshire with the ball as Northamptonshire took lunch 65 for 0.
