Baker hat-trick extends 100 per cent start

Chellaston 4 – 5 Rowsley 86

Five games into the 2012-2013 MRA season and Rowsley 86 continued their 100 per cent start, thanks to a superb display, including a hat trick, from Tim Baker.

Rowsley began the game a little off the pace but efforts from Baker and McClean tested the Chellaston keeper early on.

It was Baker who opened the scoring in stunning fashion when a routine throw into feet saw him turn his defender and curl his left-footed shot into the far left corner.

Chellaston responded almost immediately when their lively winger kept alive a dead ball to cross to the striker, who powerfully put his shot past Matt Smith in the Rowsley goal.

Chellaston then had their first of two good spells of the game, putting the Rowsley midfield and defence on the back foot and testing Matt Smith with some good efforts.

It was Rowsley, however, who re-established their lead when Sam Hoskins’s controlled header 20 yards out was latched onto by Anthony Porter, who, with his left foot, instinctively volleyed into the top right hand corner.

2-1 soon became 3-1 when Tim Baker latched onto Aaron O’Neil’s cross just before the break.

The start of the second half saw Chellaston have their second spell of the match but this time the Rowsley backline couldn’t hold out, firstly when Smith was outjumped by the Chellaston midfielder from a corner to make it 3-2 and then, when the Chellaston striker cleverly turned in the box, he was brought down by Walker for a penalty.

The striker dusted himself down to calmly power the ball into the top corner. Chellaston continued to pin Rowsley back for long periods until, on the break, Baker broke away from the Chellaston backline, rounding the keeper to complete his hat-trick and seemingly end Chellaston’s revival.

With ten minutes left, it was Baker who turned provider, this time when his low cross was tapped in from close range by Andy Roome to all but take the game away from Chellaston, who did make it an uncomfortable final five minutes after their striker pounced on some hesitation across the Rowsley backline to make the score line a respectable Chellaston 4 Rowsley 86 5.
