Bid to bring Sunday league football back to Buxton

Sunday league football could soon be returning to Buxton and the High Peak.

The Hyde and District Sunday Football League is looking to fill the gap left by the demise of the Buxton Taverners League by launching a dedicated High Peak-based division.

The once-thriving Taverners League folded in March 2012 after 37 years, due to a lack of support.

In comparison, the long-standing Hyde and District league is thriving and currently operates three divisions containing a total of 27 teams from across Glossop, Tameside and further afield.

Now officials are gauging interest in the formation of an open-aged, stand-alone division for the 2013/14 season, catering for teams in Buxton and the surrounding towns and villages.

David Brightmore, Chairman of the Hyde and District league, said: “It’s a shame that, since the loss of the Taverners League, there isn’t an opportunity anymore to play Sunday league senior football in Buxton and the surrounding towns and villages.

“In the past, these areas have been home to some fantastic teams that had some great representation in the Derbyshire cup competitions. That’s why we want to put Sunday league football back on the calendar.”

The new venture has the backing of the Derbyshire and Cheshire football associations.

Mr Brightmore added: “If we could get enough teams interested, we would be happy to arrange to come over and speak to them in more detail.

“As well as a stand-alone division, there would be the opportunity to play in cup competitions against other teams in the Hyde and District league.”

League fees cost £195 for the season, excluding pitch fees. Any teams interested in getting involved should call David on 07710 583483 or email [email protected].
