Wingerworth FC 2
Matlock Town u18s Blues 5
Matlock Town Under 18s Blues were confirmed as champions of Division Two of the Rowsley and District league with a 5-2 win at Wingerworth FC at the weekend.
Matlock started the game knowing that a draw would be enough to crown them champions and this reflected in their play, with some scrappy exchanges.
Matlock broke the deadlock on 12 minutes when Danny Hopkins crossed for Sam Hodgson to head home.
Hodgson turned provider on 15 minutes with a great cross which was tucked away by the impressive Saul Asquith to make it 2-0.
Wingerworth were on the scoresheet on 25 minutes when they took advantage of some slack defending to score.
Wingerworth were enjoying a good spell when Matlock counter-attacked with some excellent passing for Asquith to show great composure and lob the Wingerworth keeper, restoring the two-goal cushion at 3-1, which was the score at the interval.
Both teams started the second period strongly but it was Matlock’s Asquith and Fletcher who combined well for Danny Hopkins to net Matlock’s fourth goal on 47 minutes.
Wingerworth were still in the game and reduced the deficit with an excellent strike.
The home side was now enjoying most of the possession and it wasn’t until 85 minutes when Craigo Mounsey was put though by Dave Boden to place the game beyond a spirited Wingerworth at 5-2.
Matlock can now enjoy their final game of the season against second-placed Alfreton on Easter Sunday, knowing the title is in the bag.
