YOUNG footballers battled for local pride – and the chance to claim the prestigious Bunting Cup – at Matlock’s Cavendish Playing Fields last week as they took part in a keenly contested inter-schools competition.
Teams from event organisers Castle View Primary School in Matlock, plus those from fellow Matlock schools All Saints, St Joseph’s and St Giles’s, and Darley Dale Primary, Wirksworth Junior, Ashover Primary, Lea, Bonsall, Winster, Elton, South Darley, Cromford and Matlock Bath schools, all took part.
They were split into three groups, based on the size of the school.
The winners of each category were awarded a trophy and then found themselves battling it out for the honour of being named the top overall team on the day.
In thia long-standing inter-school football tournament, the 2011 winners of the individual groups were Bonsall (small schools group), St Giles’s (medium schools group) and Ashover (large schools group).
The three winners then battled it out for the outright crown with Bonsall eventually going on to win the whole event.
Jeremy Wray, from Castle View Primary School, said: “It was a very well supported event and it was great to see so many teams involved.
“Congratulations to Bonsall, and to all those who took part.
“The success of this year’s competition bodes well for future events like this and we’re already looking forward to staging next year’s Bunting Cup.”
