The club released a brief statement on Wednesday morning saying only that they had “parted company” with the 37-year old.

Maxfield had been with the Bucks since the summer of 2007 and in total made 255 appearances, scoring five goals.

He initially joined as a player-coach before stepping up to the role as player-manager in November 2011.

Upon the arrival of Martin McIntosh as manager in February 2012, Maxfield was made player-assistant and last season he made 34 appearances.

This season he had started all four league games but his final act in a Bucks shirt ended on a sour note when he saw red during Monday’s ill-tempered defeat at home to Ilkeston.

The statement added: “We would like to express our thanks to Scott for his services and wish him well for the future.”
