The 22-year-old spent around 10 days on trial with the Spireites and played 45 minutes in the friendly against Belper Town.

McGilp, who can also play in defence, is still under contract at the League One Robins but it is thought they were willing to let him go if a club came in for him.

After the win against Belper, Blues boss John Pemberton appeared to suggest that central midfield was not necessarily a priority to strengthen. It is believed a left-sided player is top of their list.

He told the DT: “We have got quite a few midfield players so it is just looking at whether we need another midfield player or maybe bring in another player, or maybe two, where is best needed. I think we certainly need cover in one position but the budget is the budget.”

In other news, Chesterfield’s home match against Stockport County on Saturday, October 17 will be shown live on BT Sport and will now kick-off at 5.20pm.

Meanwhile, former Spireites striker Lee Shaw has signed for Alfreton Town.

“He had great seasons at Grantham which got him the move to Chesterfield,” Alfreton boss Billy Heath said. “But his time was limited there and it didn’t quite work out for him.”

“He is a player we’ve been keeping an eye on throughout lockdown and when he became available we wanted to bring him in. He covers so much ground, he’s a very energetic and athletic player. We are looking for him to get going again.”
