Jean Oates, 89, known affectionately as ‘Mrs O’, was a loyal Town fan who followed her beloved team around the country.

She was the daughter of club legend Oliver Thompson who made more than 200 appearances in six seasons from 1922 to 1928 and dedicated 46 years of his life to the club.

After retiring, Thompson returned to the club as a coach when Jean was a toddler which was the start of her affinity with the Blues.

Several Chesterfield players lodged with her family and she still lived in a club-owned house when her dad died in the 70s.

“Among many jobs over the years was a spell at the glassworks where the stadium stands as well as work at the Aquarius where no doubt she served many of the playing staff,” a club statement read.

Until recently Jean continued to live close to the stadium on Stand Road.

Her last match watching Chesterfield was against Aldershot in 2018/19.

Spireites commercial manager, Jim Brown, said: "I'm really sorry to hear about Jean, who was a lovely lady and a true Spireite.

"Ollie introduced me to the family just after l first signed for the club. Jean and the rest of her family made me very welcome and it was nice for me as l obviously didn't know that many people in Chesterfield. She will be very sadly missed."

Jean had three children, 11 grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
