MATLOCK Sports made a massive step towards preserving their Midlands Regional Alliance Premier Division status on Saturday with a 3-1 win at Ashover.
In difficult conditions, from the off Sports took the game to Ashover with Bridge and Young combining well to carve out several good chances.
One of these came to fruition when a great flick by Bridge was seized on by the ever-alert Young, who promptly opened the scoring.
This slender lead was held up to half-time. With the wind now favouring the home team, they really pushed the Sports rearguard but with Whittaker and co looking solid, they withheld the pressure.
Sports started to get a grip in midfield with Charlton and Harrison getting on top.
A sweet move involving several crisp passes enabled the excellent Dom Bridge to make the score 2-0 to the visitors. Ashover’s young side refused to bow down and, from a well-struck free-kick, they got themselves back in the game.
Both sides now were going for it and it was left to young James Travis, who is showing signs of his great form of last season, to put the game beyond doubt with an excellent finish.
This was a great result and day for the ever-improving Matlock Sports with the steady influx of young local players coming through the ranks of the impressive Matlock Town under 18s such as Harry Westnedge, Ben Harrison, Thomas Evans and Josh Timmis. The future looks bright for local talent.
