Cup success for the Wanderers

Wirksworth Wanderers u9s 3

Tibshelf Athletic u9s 1

A VERY heavy mist shrouded Cavendish Fields for this cup match against Tibshelf.

The game was well balanced with both teams making chances and playing some very good passing football.

Neither team could find the net with Wanderers’ defenders Henshaw and Potts standing firm. Tom Wain then came onto the pitch to replace forward Harrison Surgey, and within a couple of minutes, had chased down a ball pushed forward by the Wanderers midfield, picked up a rebound, and threaded his way through a couple of Athletic defenders to hit the ball into the back of the net.

Athletic were quick to respond and after some forceful tackling in the midfield passed the ball to number two Daniel Wood who struck the ball sweetly and levelled the match at 1-1 at half-time.

Tibshelf started the second half as they finished the first and kept the pressure on Wanderers, but winger Sam Roberts and defenders James Colborne and Henshaw would not be beaten.

Wirksworth’s sheer determination to win prevailed with Wain breaking free to once again put Wanderers into the lead.

Daniel Charlton was unlucky not to add to the tally with a fine shot just wide of the mark.

Defender Henshaw also tried his luck with a long-range shot which was squeezed just wide of the goal by an Athletic defender. Wirksworth continued the onslaught with a volley from Liam Bednall being blocked. A great move produced Wanderers’ third goal with a ball from Bednall to Wain who picked up the pass just outside his own box, ran the length of the field, took the shot, which was pushed over the line by Charlton to make the final score three one to Wanderers.
