Dream return for Bellamy helps side into the semi-finals

The Manor Pharmacy Matlock & District Football League was frozen out this weekend barring one game which featured Shirland Miners Welfare and Woodthorpe Rovers who were battling it out in the Manor Pharmacy Shield Quarter-Final.

Shirland welcomed back a host of players from injury and a new signing in the shape of former player and goal hero Adam Bellamy, who made his bow when Guy Taylor had to be replaced early on due to injury.

Bellamy slotted straight into the midfield alongside Richard Harrison and both players made an instant impact on the game with some fantastic one-touch football.

Both started a midfield battle which would prove vital come the end of the game.

Woodthorpe went into an early lead with the kind of football played by the masters of the Premier League, thanks to a ball that started with the keeper and ended up in the back of the net after 13 passes which were concluded with a stunning goal from Aaron Large. Shortly after, Woodthorpe could have extended their lead when they were awarded a penalty but it wasn’t to be as Shirland’s keeper Darren Shaw made a fantastic save.

However, the save came at a huge cost for Shirland as keeper Shaw went off with a shoulder injury which looks like keeping him out of action for quite a while.

Shirland got back on level terms with a well-deserved goal from Jamie Morgan, whose form in recent weeks for both Shirland sides has been breathtaking.

With a semi-final place at stake, both sides played some beautiful football but it was Shirland who looked like scoring next and they did so with 20 minutes left on the clock and it came from returning hero Adam Bellamy, who fired the ball into the back of the net with real venom.

The last 20 minutes were tense as both sides came forward with everything they had but come the final whistle, a tired Shirland celebrated with their fourth semi-final in three years.

Fixtures for the Derbyshire Cup semi-final have now been confirmed. The draw sees Hopflower take on Dronfield Town while Woodthorpe Rovers will entertain Tintwistle Athletic on February 11, with a kick off time of 1.15pm.

With fingers crossed for better weather conditions this weekend, Saturday’s Matlock and District Football League fixtures for Saturday are:

Division One: Shirland MW v Hopflower, Laburnum v Woodthorpe, Miners Arms v Chesterfield Town, Shirebrook Rangers v Darley Dale. Division Two: Codnor Miners Arms v Riddings, AFC South Wingfield v Tansley, Hurst Farm Utd v Black Hippo, Matlock Sports v Wirksworth Albion.
