MATLOCK Town’s junior section will be running girls’ teams this season for the first time.
Football-mad females can represent the club at under 10s, under 11s, under 14s and under 16s levels, a move that has delighted the chairman of the club’s junior section, Kevin Rushton.
“In the past, girls have been invited to our soccer schools up to the age of seven, alongside the boys, but then have tended to drift away so we have taken the decision that we are now going to run these girls’ teams and the response has already been fantastic, which is not surprising when you think that girls football is arguably the fastest growing sport in the UK.
“This is just the latest move in a much-improved relationship between the senior and junior setups at Matlock Town Football Club, and one part of this is that all Matlock Town juniors get a free season ticket, which is a fabulous gesture by the club.”
He continued: “It is also part of a streamlining of the process which we hope will one day see more and more players from the juniors set-up make it through to the senior side and be Matlock stars of the future. It’s all about helping the size of the club grow further and our aim is to attract the best junior players in Matlock and the surrounding area.”
Managers are already in place for the girls under 11s, 14s and 16s sides but a manager is still required for under 10s, as are more players for all four teams, so interested parties are asked to contact Kevin Rushton in the first instance at email@example.com
They are also welcome to attend girls’ junior training sessions, each Saturday, from 11am-12noon, at Cavendish Fields in Matlock.
