Goal-hungry Hawks secure promotion

MATLOCK Town Hawks u14s finished off a very busy season in style by clinching promotion to Division One with three matches left to play and with a fantastic scoring record.

Over the course of the league season, the lads played 22, won 17, drew two and lost three. They scored an amazing 163 goals, conceding just 31, to give them an incredible goal difference of 132.

The Hawks end-of-season came with a hectic six matches in eight days.

They also fitted in an unbeaten tour of Holland, where they undertook matches against strong local opposition and took in a Dutch Premier League match too.

The first match on tour saw the Hawks draw 0-0 against SC Leuwen, who had beaten their previous opposition from the UK 12-0.

This was a free-flowing match as the Dutch looked to control play but the Hawks closed the ball down quickly and soon had opportunities.

Rolling substitutions saw the Hawks ensuring all players had the same time on the pitch and, although this saw players out of their normal roles, everyone adapted well in possibly one of the most entertaining 0-0 draws ever played!

The day was rounded off with time spent with the opposition team and their families.

The second match of the tour saw the Hawks take on a side from the top local division, RKSV Neuenen FC, and again the Hawks employed the entire team in a variety of roles.

One of the highlights of the match was a goal scored from just inside the opposition half with a shot placed over a despairing keeper, a first European goal for a Matlock Junior side.

The match finished 1-1 as the Hawks finished unbeaten in Europe.

The Hawks would like to thank the people who made the tour possible with fundraising events held at Morrison’s in Chesterfield, Tesco Chesterfield, Bakewell Golf Club and a special thanks to all the parents, families and friends for their magnificent season-long support.

The Hawks are now looking to push on next season in Division One and are looking to add a couple of extra players.
